Ramblings

Congratulations on surviving Monday!  The weekend countdown may officially commence again.
Today was one of those classical fall days--crisp colors, a biting breeze--and it was a constant reminder of how close we are to 2015.  That's right--it's almost been 15 years since the turn of the century. And it's almost been 11 years since they made one of my all-time favorite movies, A Series of Unfortunate Events, which, as I recently found out, is being adapted by Netflix into a television series.  Yeah, poor childhood fangirl me never got a sequel but now, after ten years, the entertainment industry has decided to make a TV show.  It's sad it won't have the same cast as the movie, but I'm still sort of anxious to see what happens because I just loved the movie and books so much.  They helped foster my obsession with writing and film-watching.

In non-entertainment news, I'm happy to say that the Change.org petition to save Mali the elephant--who's been trapped in isolation in a zoo for over 30 years--has 115,630 supporters so far!  Only 34,369 signatures are needed.  If you've got a spare millisecond, I implore you to please sign this petition to help save a beautiful, innocent creature from the hardships of isolation.  Elephants are social animals, and being without family or friends is horrible.  Thank you for helping to make the world a better place!

Vintage Magazines

I love looking at these vintage covers and advertisements.  It's amazing how much magazines like Seventeen and Vogue have changed since their early days in the 1940s.  #vintageobsession

Songs to Wake Up To

Yes, it's the morning.  Yes, that can be painful.  Thankfully, Scottish electronic band CHVRCHΞS is here to help.  And Friday's tomorrow.

Acne, Anxiety, Autumn

It's a November Wednesday, and the weather is exactly like something out of the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving episode. Speaking of Thanksgiving, by the way, it's only three weeks away, and I'm possibly too excited about seeing the giant Hello Kitty balloon take over NYC,...

Holidays aside (I am totally not listening to Bruce Springsteen's Christmas album right now, lol...), I wanted to talk a little bit about stress/nerves/all-around general anxiety because of the massive impacts it can have on our lives.  I've been stressed about assignments, etc. lately, and it's taken a bit of a toll on my skin.  Currently there's a breakout on my forehead, both sides of my face, and my chin.  Anyone who has ever suffered from acne will know that it's really frustrating to wake up one morning covered in little red volcanoes.

When I get a breakout

But this post isn't so much about acne as it is about one of its biggest facilitators: stress!  The crazy thing is that, retrospectively, a lot of the things I get nervous about will mean nothing to me in the future.  There's so much more important stuff going on right now (as I'm so often reminded by the news and Mother Jones magazine) that it shouldn't be necessary to "sweat the small stuff."  It's the start of a new month (or at least it was four days ago), so let's make a resolution to stress less, appreciate more, and be all-around more contributing citizens.  Stop worrying.  Wear your happy shoes.  Sign that animal welfare petition.  Make the most of your November--2014's almost over.

Help Free Mali the Elephant!

Blog friends, Mali is a sweet elephant confined to cramped isolation at the Manila Zoo in the Philippines.  Elephants are social animals who need friends, family, and space in order to lead quality lives, and Mali is terribly deprived.  Please, help to free her!  You can sign the petition at Change.org and "like" Mali's Facebook page to help raise awareness about her suffering.  Thank you for helping to make the world a better place!

The Extra Hour

The hour lost to Spring has finally returned!  I can't express how awesome it was to wake up this morning at 7:45 and realize that it was actually 6:45--the weekend has gotten longer by an hour, and my normal Sunday anxieties have miraculously died down a bit.  No longer do I feel quite so much like the paranoid, chronically-late rabbit from Alice in Wonderland.

That being said, though, the time change does bring up a fairly good question: what is to be done with this "extra hour" that we have so fortunately received?  Sixty minutes may not seem like much, yes, but they still offer more time than we had yesterday.
